I just saw an old show about a town trapped in a time-loop because a man had been tortured and killed. Everyone had to repeat the day until someone had the courage to speak truth to power and stop the torture and execution. I suddenly considered the Christ story. He was tortured and murdered, and no one had the courage to speak truth to power. When we speak truth, the cowards in charge back down - not without a fight, not without violence, but they back down. In Nazi Germany every time German wives went public, and demonstrated, demanding their Jewish husbands back - their husbands were released.
Our central religious story teaches us that suffering is meant to be, and we can not escape the cup. That gives everyone an excuse not to speak up for victims The religion allows us, teaches us, makes it holy to allow suffering and never speak up. This may be the most dastardly scam ever inflicted on a people!
